Leadership in Greek Life

Being a member of a Greek organization is an experience in and of itself. You get the experience of attending philanthropy events, attending chapters, attending socials, and hanging out with sisters. However, an organization cannot run without leadership.

Every Greek organization is different in the officers it elects and in the way it is run, and every Greek organization offers so many leadership opportunities for its members. My sorority has 10 executive council members and under those council members are what is called “appointed officers.” The council positions are elected by the chapter and the appointed officers are picked through an application process. The council consists of the normal members: President, VP-Member Education, VP-Finance, Secretary, VP-Community Service, and so on. The appointed officer positions are smaller positions, made up of assistants to council positions, t-shirt chair, Greek weekend chair, intramural chair, etc.

My first leadership experience in my organization was an appointed council position. The position that I held was technically considered part of the executive council, but I was not voted in by the chapter I was appointed by council after applying. The title of my position was Panhellenic Delegate and I was my organization’s representative at Panhellenic Executive Council meetings.

I am a strong believer that you get out of your sorority what you put into it. I am so happy that I took that step to hold a leadership position because it only enhanced my experience. I was able to meet so many sisters that I may not have known well before and meet people in other organizations, I was able to work on council and learn the ins and outs of my sorority, and I got to experience Greek life from another side. It was so cool to learn exactly how my organization runs and to play a role in planning events put on for the chapter.

Holding a leadership position in your Greek organization is something that I highly recommend. It can be stressful at times, but the memories you make, the experiences you gain, and the skills you learn are all priceless.
