Bruce Lee died at the age of 32. Those short years complete his life for he lived so intensely. He lived without a purpose and that’s why he lived limitlessly.
If you don’t know who he is, it is quite likely you could mistake him for a philosopher or a Zen master. There is music in his words, glory in his acts and a poetic muse in his motion.
There is a Zen story of a king who offered a princely reward to the winning artist for the painting — the theme of which was — stillness.
Artists from far and wide came with their entries of still water with a solitary ripple, of morning sun against tranquil hues of sky, of doves flying back against the backdrop of snowcapped mountains and many more.
Noteworthy as they were, but king found something amiss. Then an entry came that had a ferocious waterfall cascading down in full steam — beautiful it was, but doesn’t come close to denote stillness.
There was a beaver sitting on the precipice of the rock face next to the fall. Droplets sitting on his fur were reflecting a hundred suns. He was sitting in bliss, eyes semi-closed in a stupor.
“This is what stillness is”, the king exclaimed in joy — stillness in the middle of dynamism is the character of stillness. This is what differentiates it from deadness.
That is why meditation is a dynamic exercise. Great energy is required to be fully present in the moment. Stillness demands energy.
When the mind is quiet, we think the clearest. The action in stillness is oneness with the action.
“I don’t hit, it hits all by itself” — Bruce Lee
