How will the world be if actions have no consequences? How will people treat each other if they can just forget bad memories every time they hurt each other? When you can just easily dump garbage, do…

What is WEB 3.0?

What is this WEB 3.0 that everyone is talking about lately? If you have pondered the same thing, you are at the right place.

The evolution of the internet can be classified into the following three eras;

WEB 1.0- 1991 to 2004

WEB 2.0- 2004 to Present

WEB 3.0- The future

WEB 1.0 is the internet being in a baby phase. During this time internet was just a collection of static web pages interlinked together. They were plain, mundane, and non-interactive. You can think of the whole of the internet as just Wikipedia pages- all linked together.

Sounds boring? Well, there was a bright side to the internet back then- NO ADS!

Yes, the world was yet to realize the potential of the internet. Most of the world wasn’t even taking the internet seriously, let alone putting their money on ads to get customers.

WEB 2.0 is from 2004 to the present. The core change that the internet went through in this phase was it became interactive. Tech giants like Google, Facebook, etc., came into our lives and changed them forever.

Remember the last time you went to eat at a fancy restaurant and did not upload a photo of the food on Instagram before eating? Yeah, no one does. Internet and social media have become inseparable parts of our lives.

Websites started collecting our data in order to serve us better content (at least that’s what they said). The intent was to make you stay longer on their websites. The longer you stay on their website, the more money they make. However, this data collection wasn’t the end of the story as many websites started selling our data to advertisers to show us targeted ads.

Doesn’t sound fair? Ah well, you willingly gave up your privacy when you signed up for any of these apps.

So, right now, you and your friend could log in to the same app and see a very different feed. It all depends on your past interest. This internet era is the age of targeted advertising and lack of privacy.

WEB 3.0 is the next step in the evolution of the internet. This phase will most likely use blockchain technology to decentralize the internet.

In WEB 2.0, ‘you’ the user is the product, but in 3.0, you become the owner of your data. Right now, when you post something on the internet and want to remove it, later on, you can easily do so, but you will most likely find it somewhere else. Meaning once something is uploaded to the internet, it never goes away from it.

Web 3.0 makes you the owner of your data. You own every post, photo, and video you upload, so when you want to remove something, you’re at complete liberty to do so. On the other hand, your post will not be on one social network but on thousands of computers at once, so it can’t be taken down even if anyone wants to.

The flip side to this is that we might see a sharp increase in hateful posts, but we can figure a way to control this as we move ahead. But, we do have to remember technology isn’t good or evil inherently; it all depends on how we use it.

The world around us is changing fast, and the internet world is changing even faster. The future of the internet does look exciting at this point, but it is very hard to predict how it will turn out.
