Top 10 Films of 2018

Expert film-making once again from Alfonso Cuaron which is by no means a surprise. I’m not sure what to say about this movie other than to just watch it really (it’s on Netflix….NOW). It’s a slow and demanding movie but I believe the payoff is definitely there.

2. If Beale Street Could Talk

So much love! This movie is gorgeous, hats off to Barry Jenkins for making another great movie. Also, shout out to whoever did the costumes in this movie because I couldn’t stop thinking of how great the colors worked throughout the movie. Beale Street tells the story of a young pregnant woman in 1970’s Harlem whose boyfriend recently went to prison after being accused of rape. In the middle of the movie, Brian Tyree Henry pops up for one of my favorite moments in film this year. As far as I’m concerned, Brian Tyree Henry is one of the best actors we have out there today and he gives such a nuanced and powerful performance in his brief time on screen here.

3. Paddington 2

This movie makes me just hope for a world in which we all learn from Paddington and his kind heartedness. Frankly, this movie makes me want to be a better person. This movie is so wholesome and full of love in a way that’s not seen in many movies these days. Hugh Grant gives his best performance in probably decades as the villain of the movie. Hugh Grant just looks like he’s having so much fun in this movie, something I don’t think I’ve seen from him in a long time as an actor.

4. The Favourite

Expert performances all around from Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Coleman. I love the screenplay for this movie, it manages to hop tonally and have you check your allegiances throughout the film.

5. Mission Impossible: Fallout

Tom Cruise is gonna end up killing himself making one of these movies. This movie is everything that a big budget action movie should aspire to be. The plot is more or less just an avenue to go from one insane set piece to the next and I have zero issues with this.

6. Eighth Grade

Woof, this movie is uncomfortable because you just want to reach out and help poor Kayla. I’ve never seen a movie understand what it’s like to deal with anxiety and to get such an accurate portrayal of what it’s like to have a panic attack. Awkward, uncomfortable, funny; it’s eighth grade all over again.

7. Widows

What if we made a heist movie but had the guy who made 12 Years A Slave and Shame? I love how this movie is basically Steve McQueen trying to make his version of a heist movie and it’s done through female empowerment and a laughably over the top Chicago accent from Colin Farrell.

8. A Star is Born

Ahhhhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhh

That’s Shallow, right? Great acting performances all around. I’d say Cooper’s direction is good enough but not great. Either way though, this is a movie worth checking out.

9. Blindspotting

For a first time director, this movie is so incredibly polished. Daveed Diggs along with his long-time friend Rafael Casal wrote and starred in this Bay Area film as you watch Diggs’ character try to wait out his last few days of probation. How this movie handles race relations, the criminal justice system, and gentrification is all so incredibly well done. I’m excited to see what Daveed Diggs does next, I sure hope it’s more writing though.

10. Minding the Gap

Minding the Gap tells the story of two teenage children trying to escape their tortured daily lives filled of domestic abuse and little to no future. Will they reject the path set before them or continue the cycle? Minding the Gap is a strong and effective documentary and it’s one of my favorites of the year.

Honorable Mentions

Black Panther

Ryan Coogler goes 3 for 3 in his collaborations with Michael B. Jordan. Being able to cram in heavy topics like Coogler does in a MCU movie is no easy task, but he does it once again. I will fault this movie for having somewhat boring fight sequences (most of Marvel’s fight sequences are pretty boring).

Crazy Rich Asians

A movie about Asian American people and the world they fit in of not really being Asian and not really being American. Constance Wu shines in a way I expected from watching her on Fresh off the Boat.

First Reformed

All in on Ethan Hawke always. Also, I really feel like Marvel really made a mistake not casting him as Doctor Strange. Instead I’ll have to settle for small movies like this and the Juliet, Naked (kind of a really delightful movie by the way).

Hereditary

It’s spooky, it’s weird, and it’s incredibly gutsy.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

This movie knows what it is and they were like “what……if we got people that can actually sing for this movie? Also…what if we got one of the most celebrated romantic comedy writers, Richard Curtis, to help write the story? Also, what if we got Wes Anderson’s cinematographer? I know, crazy ideas huh? This movie is a delight and I will hear nothing else!

Overlord

B-movie shlock at it’s finest. Shout out to Wyatt Russell for being the best thing in basically everything he’s in. I’m ready for the Wyatt and Kurt Russell movie now.

Searching

Yeah it’s a gimmick movie told entirely told on screens but…it’s also a really compelling thriller. John Cho has been waiting in the wings far too long to get his chance at a role as meaty as this and he takes it and runs as fast and as hard as he can with it. I’m looking forward to more movies #StarringJohnCho and to see what Aneesh Chaganty can do with a more traditional storytelling method. There’s a lot of care put into this movie for Cho’s characters Korean heritage, something I think went overlooked by a lot of others.

Sorry to Bother You

Boots Riley is like a rookie baseball player who goes for the fences on his first at bat. The movie is rough around the edges but I respect it so much for how bold and original it is.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Phil Lord continues to do Phil Lord things and make things that works that have no business in working. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is so acutely aware of what a superhero movie and our understanding of them; it expertly flips it on its head and then plays with the conventions like a mad scientist in a writer’s room (what I wouldn’t give for his version of Solo).
