Hope In Dark Times

You can read a self-help book. You can read a spiritual book. You can study history. But you need hope to cope with life. And it can be hard to maintain hope in the midst of a pandemic. You may ask yourself, “what’s the purpose of my life?” Our purpose is to believe in a power greater than our selves. I call that power “God.” God can turn a frown upside down. God is the only being that can make a difference in dark times.

I refer to this era as a dark time because we forgot about hope. There were times when I wondered about my future. There were times I wondered how my present choices shapes the future. One thing I learned is that you should never regret the past. The past contains mistakes, failures, and disaster. We may have sabotaged relationships. We may have taken out our anger on the wrong person. I remember when I was in college, I was stressed out about how I was going to pay my tuition. I was even wondering if college is for me. Why would a loving God allow me to be stressed out to the point where I hated life?

We go through things as a test to see how we cope with everything. We need hope to cope with stress. We also need to demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and endurance during stressful times. One of the most stressful moments of my life was college. I was so stressed that I lost my hair. But then I realized I had a mental illness. In recovery, I learned that I am not responsible for my illness. I am only responsible for my recovery. I would like to live a long time. I would like to go back to college to be a student for life.

I get my inspiration from psalms and proverbs. I get my inspiration by having a made up mind to not give up. In the midst of the pandemic, we are dealing with inflation. History is rather fascinating because in 1916, we were dealing with polio. In 1918, we were dealing with the Spanish Flu. 100 years later in 2019, we were dealing with the Corona Virus. Over a million people lost their lives to the COVID 19 pandemic. We have hope that one day the business cycle will reach its peak. We have hope that one day, the nightmare of corona will be over and done with. We need to turn to God in the midst of these trials and tribulations.

We are tempted to believe that the world is coming to an end. We are tempted to believe that we are fighting the last war: “Armageddon.” I believe that the world ends in peace. My peace shall spread to the next man. If I were to tell you about my past, I would laugh at the mistakes I made. I would also laugh at the silly choices I made in the past. There are good memories when it comes to the past. There are also ugly moments. We must be willing to embrace both the good and the bad. I call on God to teach me about faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these three is love (1Cor. 13:13). That is how I feel for all my people.

We need to learn to love since the bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:7–9). I am a firm believer that hope in Christ leads to salvation. Salvation is a gift given to us by the divine being. It is easy for us to obtain since it involved Christ dying for the sins of the world. Christ is my hero. He demonstrates faith, hope, love, resilience, and patience. These five things are learned. We have to experience a “Struggle” in order to not take our freedom for granted. I think about the countries where people have to sneak and study the word of God. God hears your cry. Turn to the Lord for help. Turn to the Lord for hope. Talk to God the same way you talk to a friend.

God is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2). God perfects our faith. The word of God teach us that “Faith” is the “assurance of things hoped for” (Heb. 11:1). Hope and optimism are based on circumstances. Faith is demonstrated by our actions.

“God, give us hope to cope with life in the name of Jesus Christ. Take us out of the dark and bring us to the light. Teach us to be resilient. Help us to believe in ourselves even when the odds are against us. Amen.”
