The Angry White Man

As we think about the events in Charlottesville, VA there are more layers to peel back in order to gain a clear picture of the degradation that exists. The recent events remind us of the legacy of domestic terrorism and racial violence that continues to thrive in the US. Even with the full throated hate and significant loss of life, its hard for me to call the protests a demonstration of white supremacy -- the state or condition of being superior to all, as much as it appears to be an acknowledgement of white male desperation. The protest chants of "you will not replace us" reveals the belief amongst white males that they have lost. Lost power, lost their sense of agency and are suffering from a feeling of bitter disenfranchisement.

What I've witnessed are the ways in which feelings of humiliation and neglect have given way to anger and rage. White males are saying to the world that they are hurt and that they feel very discarded. To be sure, much of the support for Trump from his base emanates from the belief of having a protector and defender of white males from the president.

In the weeks, months and years to come a lot will have to be done to address the enmity filled demonstration of the Charlottesville protests. Part of the analysis will need to include an examination of white male anger in specific and masculinity in general. In many ways, manhood has to be rebuilt from the ground up to a place of health, with greater feelings of self worth, self awareness and tactics to better manage the trauma that exists.

We not only need to protect our communities and families from the danger that lies ahead but we also need to work towards healing, being brave enough to confront the toxic decay that exists.

The upside of the disgraceful events in Charlottesville, VA is that there is now a clear picture of the cancer and concern that is white male anger for all to see.
