When everyone gets angry but before they call the cops

When daddy’s in the kitchen serving papers to their mom

We made it to the age where all our friends are getting married

And one of them is desperate cause she’s sober and alone

And we stick them on our windows panes to make our house a home

And we have strong opinions on where all the folders go

We made it to the age where all our parents pets are dying

And we’re all staying silent while they’re crying on the phone

And set the bar by reflex on the belt to stake our claim

We know that they make some noise in the morning after rain

And we’re the favorite uncles who play catch then have to go

Who show the folks on Facebook just how much their kids have grown

We made it to the age where all our friends have diagnoses

And carry plastic boxes so they don’t forget their pills

And we say “He’ll be tall someday” and truly hope he will.

And kids make too much money making music that’s no good

We’ve made it to the age when she says, “Let me call the plumber”

And you just have to let her even though, of course, You could

And know the cheapest florist with the freshest lily wreaths

We made it to the age where all we ever throw is roses

And all our conversations are on memories and grief

We made it to the age where someone carves our name in granite

And all our children fight about how much they have to pay

We made it to that age where all our children’s kids have memories

And their kids will have stories though the details will be vague

We made it to the age where all of Heaven’s doors are opened

We see that broad eternity we always knew was there

We made it to the age where we have finally learned the lesson

And numbers never matter just so long as you are there.
